Aker BP implements PLANS for Drilling and Wells improvement
Contact us
For many years, Aker BP, Norway's largest operator, relied on our legacy P1™ time and cost estimation software. Now, they've transitioned to our next-generation PLANS™ software, and we reached out to learn about their experience with its implementation within their Drilling and Wells Improvement and Performance Team.
Drilling Engineer Trine has been leading the implementation of PLANS™ within Aker BP's Drilling & Wells organization, and we're incredibly grateful for the smooth and productive collaboration with her.

You used iQx™ P1™ for well time and cost estimation for many years. You recently implemented iQx™ PLANS™. How is your experience with using the new application compared with its predecessor? Any specific benefits?
It’s been a journey, but as a result of close collaboration with AGR Software implementation team we’re really starting to see the benefits with using PLANS™. I would like to highlight the introduction of API enabling data transfer between the systems, secondly, that the time estimation is done on the activity set following the well through it’s life cycle, and thirdly, the possibility to do campaign modelling.
You have recently modelled a 55-well drilling campaign on Yggdrasil in PLANS™. Was it difficult to set up such an extensive workspace?
Yggdrasil is an extremely important project for Aker BP. It consists of several fields and we decided to use one of the fields as pilot for PLANS™ modelling. The workspace included four development wells to be drilled in two drilling campaigns. It’s been quite time consuming to make PLANS™ applicable in such a complex case but once the foundation was in place it was easy to duplicate – and adjust the workspace for the remaining fields.
A key feature in PLANS™ is to have "predefined variables", meaning standard operations or KPIs. What value do you see in using those?
It is of high value! We build our models on pre-defined variables to ensure consistency across our teams and assets. The use of standardised pre-defined variables also provides the opportunity to further connect data to other systems through API.
You have connected PLANS™ to other software structure. What is the purpose of the integrations?
Connecting PLANS™ to other systems It simplifies the daily work, it reduces the risk for human error, transferring the same data into different systems and it approves the data quality.
This is the future.
You have so many engineers that will be using PLANS™. What's your plan for making sure that best practices are followed constantly?
We have assigned Asset Champions to ensure consistency across teams and assets. The feedback from the users so far is very positive, and with close collaboration with AGR Software Implementation team, I’m sure the engineers will see the benefits with using PLANS™.
